What drives the price
Certification
FSC for wood, FloorScore or GreenGuard Gold for emissions, Cradle to Cradle for full lifecycle. Certified products cost modestly more and the documentation must be requested when ordering, not after installation.
Material
Cork and bamboo are rapidly renewable and moderately priced. True linoleum, made from linseed oil, cork dust and jute, is durable and biodegradable but needs periodic maintenance. Reclaimed hardwood costs the most and has the smallest footprint.
Finish system
Water-based finishes emit far less than solvent-based ones and are now the standard for site-finished floors. They cost slightly more and cure faster.
Adhesives and underlay
Low-VOC adhesives and natural-fibre or recycled-content underlays complete the assembly. A certified floor over a high-emission adhesive defeats the purpose.
Installer familiarity
These products have different handling requirements than mainstream flooring. An installer who works with them regularly will produce a better result and is worth seeking out specifically.

01Is cork durable enough for a family home?
Yes, with a good finish and reasonable care. Cork is softer than wood so it dents under heavy furniture without pads, but it is warm, quiet, naturally resistant to mould and comfortable to stand on. Kitchens and home offices are where it performs best.
02Is bamboo really eco-friendly?
It depends on the product. Bamboo grows quickly and regenerates without replanting, which is genuinely positive, but much of it is manufactured overseas with adhesives that may emit formaldehyde and shipped long distances. Look for FloorScore or GreenGuard Gold certification to address the emissions question.
03What is the lowest-emission flooring?
Natural linoleum, cork with a water-based finish, and FSC-certified solid hardwood finished on site with a water-based product. Among mainstream options, FloorScore-certified vinyl performs well on emissions despite being a synthetic product.
