How the estimate works
The calculator starts from the typical installed price range per square foot for your province, covering materials and standard labour. It then applies your city's local index (downtown condos and high-cost markets run higher, smaller centres lower) and multiplies by your area. Removal of the old floor adds $0.50–1.50 per sq ft for carpet, $1–2.50 for vinyl, laminate or wood, and $2–4 for tile.
What moves the price
- The product: the low end of each range is entry-level material; premium lines, wide planks and patterns such as herringbone sit at the top or above it.
- The subfloor: uneven floors need levelling compound or new plywood before anything goes down. See subfloor preparation.
- The rooms: many small rooms, closets and doorways take longer than one open space of the same size.
- Access: condos may need elevator bookings, board approval and acoustic underlay. See condo flooring rules.
- Extras: stairs are priced per step, and new baseboards, transitions to tile and furniture moving are itemised.
Common questions
01How much does it cost to install 1,000 sq ft of flooring in Canada?
In Ontario, about $5,000–10,000 for vinyl plank, $4,500–9,000 for laminate, $9,000–18,000 for hardwood and $12,000–25,000 for tile, installed and before tax and removal of the old floor. Other provinces and cities differ; the calculator above uses the same ranges as our city pages.
02What's included in the installed price?
Materials and standard installation labour: underlay where needed, standard transitions and baseboard reinstallation. Removing and disposing of the old floor, major subfloor levelling, stairs, and moving heavy furniture are usually quoted separately.
03Why is my city more expensive than the provincial average?
Labour rates, travel, parking and building rules differ by city. Condo installations in dense downtowns often need booked elevators, acoustic underlay and board approval, which adds cost. The calculator applies each city's local index to the provincial range.
04Is sales tax included?
No. The calculator shows prices before tax. Add HST or GST and PST for your province to the final figure.
05How accurate is the estimate?
It's a planning range based on typical installed prices for mid-range products. A written quote after a free in-home measure is the only firm number, because it accounts for your subfloor, room shapes and the exact product.
