Why slabs are different

Concrete in contact with the ground wicks moisture and releases it upward as vapour, continuously and invisibly. A slab that has never had standing water can still emit enough vapour to destroy a laminate floor over a few years. This is why a relative humidity probe test before installation matters more in a basement than anywhere else in the house.

The case for a subfloor panel

Dimpled subfloor panels create an air gap between the slab and the finished floor. That gap does three things: it lets any water that arrives drain and evaporate rather than sitting against your flooring, it dramatically improves comfort underfoot on a cold slab, and it bridges minor slab cracks. At $2 to $4 per square foot it is the single best value upgrade in a basement.

What to avoid

Laminate swells irreversibly. Solid hardwood cups and cannot be nailed to concrete anyway. Engineered hardwood is marginal and only defensible in a walkout with a documented dry slab. Carpet with underpad traps moisture and becomes a mould problem after any water event.

Regional considerations

In Winnipeg, Regina and Saskatoon, expansive clay cracks slabs seasonally, making a floating floor over a subfloor panel essential. In Halifax, Saint John and St. John's the problem is summer humidity rather than liquid water, and a dehumidifier holding 45 to 50 percent is part of the solution. In Calgary and Edmonton the concern is the cold slab itself, which is why insulated subfloor panels are so common there.

Carpet tiles as a compromise

If you want soft flooring in a basement, carpet tiles over a dimpled panel are far safer than broadloom with underpad. Individual tiles can be lifted, dried or replaced after a water event rather than losing the whole floor.
