Carpet is the cheapest flooring per square foot in most of Canada. Carpeting three bedrooms of 150 square feet each costs roughly $1,600 to $4,000 installed, against $2,300 to $5,400 for vinyl plank and considerably more for hardwood.

Allergies and air quality

The evidence is more nuanced than often claimed. Carpet traps allergens, which keeps them out of the air but requires thorough regular vacuuming with a HEPA filter to remove them. Hard floors let dust circulate more but allow complete removal with a damp mop. For significant allergy sufferers, hard floors with washable rugs are generally recommended.

Comfort and warmth

Carpet is warmer underfoot and absorbs sound, which matters in a bedroom and in a home with multiple floors. A hard floor in a bedroom over an unheated space can be genuinely cold on a Canadian winter morning without a rug.

Resale perception

Buyer preference has shifted toward hard flooring on main levels but remains mixed for bedrooms, where many buyers still prefer carpet. Neither choice will hurt a sale if the material is in good condition and the style is current.

The hybrid approach

Hard flooring on the main level, stairs and upper hallway with carpet in bedrooms is the most common Canadian specification. It puts durable, cleanable surfaces where the traffic and spills are, keeps bedrooms warm and quiet, and costs less than doing the whole house in hard flooring.
